Officially confirmed

Game Science’s project page and official teaser identify Black Myth: Zhong Kui as a Black Myth project. The official gameplay upload says it offers a first look at the protagonist in combat. Those are the reliable boundaries for the current public material. [2] [3] [1]

Directly observable

The official upload presents combat footage involving the figure described as the protagonist. That supports discussing a playable lead as part of the reveal, without assigning an unofficial character name or treating a visual impression as a completed biography. [1]

The combat guide records the same boundary for visible actions and mechanics.

Interpretation

“Zhong Kui” is the project’s public title and its clear mythological reference. It is reasonable to discuss that context, but it is an interpretation to conclude from the title alone that the playable character’s final in-game identity, role or story is confirmed.

The mythology behind the name is separate from game canon. Who is Zhong Kui? covers the traditional context without turning it into an unannounced character biography.

What remains unknown

The current evidence does not establish:

  • the protagonist’s official in-game name;
  • whether the playable character is explicitly Zhong Kui in the game’s canon;
  • a confirmed backstory, faction or relationship map;
  • the character’s final abilities or progression role; or
  • whether the work-in-progress presentation will match the shipped story.

Those details should stay unknown until Game Science or qualifying claim-specific evidence answers them. For the broader footage context, see Black Myth: Zhong Kui gameplay.
